The best MCP servers for options data in 2026

11 MCP servers that give Claude, Cursor and other AI assistants options data, compared on what they expose, hosted vs local, and what the key costs.

MCP, the Model Context Protocol, lets an AI assistant call live data tools instead of answering from stale training data. For options traders that is a real workflow change: you ask Claude or Cursor which of your tickers saw unusual call buying today, and it queries an actual feed. The catch is that 'options data' means very different things from one MCP server to the next - flow alerts, full chains with greeks, volatility surfaces, or end-of-day contract files.

We went through each vendor's own docs, repositories and pricing pages to sort out what every server actually exposes and what it costs to switch on. Disclosure: OptionsBell is our product, so it is listed first. Everything below it is described from the vendors' own sources. Prices change, so check them before you subscribe.

How we compared them

  • Options coverage - unusual activity and flow, chains and greeks, volatility analytics, or end-of-day only.
  • Hosted or local - a remote URL you paste into your client, or a process you install and keep running yourself.
  • Cost to use - the cheapest plan that actually unlocks the options tools, not just the free key.
  • Who maintains it - official vendor server or community project, and what the data terms allow.

1. OptionsBell - unusual options activity your assistant can explain

OptionsBell refreshes the US options tape every 5 minutes during market hours and flags unusual activity. The hosted MCP server at optionsbell.com/mcp exposes that dataset as 13 tools, so instead of reading a dashboard you ask: which names had the largest call premium today, which tickers have shown unusual flow for weeks in a row, where open interest is building. It is built for the question 'where is the unusual money going', not for pulling raw quotes.

  • Options data: unusual activity by market and by symbol, top prints of the day, flow history and multi-day streaks, expiry concentration, flow sentiment, IV rank, open-interest changes, sector rollups and a market-regime read.
  • Setup: hosted. Point Claude Desktop, Cursor, Continue or any MCP client at the server and paste your API key, or generate a personal connector URL in settings that you can revoke.
  • Cost: $24.99/mo, one plan. MCP, the REST API and email alerts are all included.
  • Not included: full option chains, tick-level history or order placement. Pair it with a raw-data server below if you need those.

2. Unusual Whales - the broadest flow dataset, priced for heavy users

Unusual Whales ships an official MCP server, hosted at api.unusualwhales.com/api/mcp or runnable locally through its npm package. It is the most complete flow-oriented server on this list: flow alerts, the full trades tape, chains, greeks, IV rank, greek exposure by strike, max pain and open interest, plus dark pool and congressional trading categories.

  • Setup: hosted or local, authenticated with an Unusual Whales API key.
  • Cost: the API is sold separately from the dashboard plans. API Basic is $150/mo, or $125/mo billed annually. Some categories, like futures, need the higher tier or an add-on.
  • Best for: traders and builders who want flow, dark pool and dealer-exposure data under one key and can justify the price.

3. Massive (formerly Polygon.io) - the whole market data API, including tick data

Polygon.io now operates as Massive, and its official MCP server gives an assistant generic access to the full API rather than a curated set of options tools: it can search endpoints, call them and query the results, and it ships Black-Scholes helpers for delta, gamma and the other greeks. The repository marks the server as experimental.

  • Setup: local only, installed with uv, authenticated with a Massive API key.
  • Cost: options plans run from a free end-of-day tier (5 calls/min) to $29/mo (15-minute delayed, greeks and IV), $79/mo (adds trades) and $199/mo (real-time trades and quotes).
  • Best for: developers who want raw aggregates, trades and quotes and are comfortable doing their own analysis.

4. Alpha Vantage - one key for stocks, fundamentals and historical chains

Alpha Vantage runs an official hosted MCP server with OAuth login, and it also installs locally. Its options endpoints cover real-time chains with optional greeks and IV, plus historical chains for any date back to 2008 - a useful archive for testing ideas. The same key covers time series, fundamentals, news sentiment and technical indicators.

  • Setup: hosted at mcp.alphavantage.co/mcp, or local.
  • Cost: the free key allows 25 requests per day, and the options endpoints are Premium-only. Premium starts at $49.99/mo.
  • Best for: a single, affordable key when options are one part of a broader research workflow.

5. Alpaca - options data plus paper trading in the same server

Alpaca's official MCP server is a brokerage tool as much as a data tool. It returns option chains, snapshots with greeks and IV, bars, trades and quotes, and it can place multi-leg option orders and exercise positions. Paper trading is the default, which is the right default when an AI assistant has order access.

  • Setup: local only. Alpaca states it does not provide a hosted MCP server.
  • Cost: free with the indicative options feed. Real-time OPRA data is part of the $99/mo Algo Trader Plus plan.
  • Best for: testing options strategies end to end, from data to paper execution.

6. Tradier - hosted chains and order entry for Tradier customers

Tradier hosts an official MCP server at mcp.tradier.com/mcp with around 20 tools, including option chains with greeks, historical data, and multi-leg and conditional order types. Tokens come from a Tradier Brokerage account, with a flag to point it at paper trading.

  • Setup: hosted, authenticated with a Tradier Brokerage token.
  • Cost: brokerage plans range from a free Lite account to $10/mo and $35/mo tiers. Tradier's MCP docs do not list a separate fee.
  • Best for: existing Tradier clients who want chains and order placement from their assistant.

7. ThetaData - deep historical options data, served from your own machine

ThetaData builds its MCP server into Theta Terminal v3, which runs locally and exposes the server on localhost. The documentation examples cover end-of-day greeks, quotes, trades, OHLC and open interest - the depth ThetaData is known for, queryable in plain language.

  • Setup: local only, through a running Theta Terminal.
  • Cost: requires a paid subscription. Options plans are $40/mo (Value), $80/mo (Standard) and $160/mo (Pro).
  • Best for: historical and tick-level options research at a moderate price.

8. ORATS - volatility research with an archive back to 2007

ORATS exposes its API as MCP tools through the official ORATS CLI. The data is volatility-first: implied volatility surfaces, forecast volatility, live and delayed strikes, end-of-day data since 2007 and one-minute intraday data since 2020, with tick-level prints available as an add-on.

  • Setup: local only. ORATS states there is no hosted MCP endpoint.
  • Cost: the delayed Data API starts at $199/mo for 20,000 requests a month.
  • Best for: serious IV and volatility work where history matters more than speed.

9. FlashAlpha - dealer positioning analytics out of the box

FlashAlpha hosts a closed-source MCP server with 73 tools focused on analytics rather than raw data: gamma, delta, vanna and charm exposure, max pain, quotes with greeks, SVI volatility surfaces, 0DTE views and historical replay.

  • Setup: hosted, with API-key or OAuth authentication.
  • Cost: free for 5 requests per day. Basic is $79/mo for 250 requests per day; historical data sits in the $1,499/mo Alpha plan.
  • Best for: traders who want GEX-style dealer positioning computed for them.

10. EODHD - global market data with an end-of-day options add-on

EODHD offers an official hosted MCP server that covers global prices, fundamentals and macro data. Its options tools are end-of-day only: US options contracts, daily options data and underlyings, with greeks and IV across 6,000+ symbols and two years of history.

  • Setup: hosted (API key or OAuth), or local.
  • Cost: base plans range from free to €99.99/mo. Options are a separate add-on, listed at roughly €30-40/mo depending on the current promotion.
  • Best for: global stock research where end-of-day options data is enough.

11. Yahoo Finance (community) - free for prototyping, not for production

Several community MCP servers wrap the open-source yfinance library; a popular one exposes option expiration dates and option chains with no API key required. There is no greeks tool, and the terms matter: yfinance states it is not affiliated with or endorsed by Yahoo, is intended for research and educational purposes, and that Yahoo's data is for personal use only.

  • Setup: local only.
  • Cost: free.
  • Best for: trying out an options workflow in an afternoon before paying for a real feed.

Which one should you pick?

  • You want to know where unusual money is going on your tickers: OptionsBell.
  • You want flow, dark pool and congressional data under one key and have the budget: Unusual Whales.
  • You are building a pipeline on raw trades and quotes: Massive or ThetaData.
  • You research volatility or dealer positioning: ORATS or FlashAlpha.
  • You want the assistant to place (paper) trades: Alpaca or Tradier.

Many setups combine two: a flow server to surface the names worth a look, and a raw-data server to dig into the chain. If you want to try the first half, connecting OptionsBell to Claude, Cursor or Continue takes a couple of minutes, and the same key works with the REST API. For the API side without MCP, see our options data API comparison.
