The best options data APIs for developers in 2026

11 options data APIs compared on price, real-time vs delayed data, flow signals vs raw chains, rate limits and licensing.

Almost every options data API promises coverage of the US market. The differences that decide your build are elsewhere: whether the data arrives already labeled as flow or unusual activity, or as raw chains and trades you analyze yourself; whether the entry plan is real-time or delayed; how requests are metered; and whether the license lets you show the data to anyone but yourself.

Disclosure: OptionsBell is our product, so it is listed first. Every other entry is described from the provider's own pricing page and documentation. Prices and limits change, so confirm them before you build on them.

Signal APIs vs raw data APIs

Signal APIs return data that has already been filtered or labeled: unusual activity, sweeps, flow alerts. You get to answers quickly, but you inherit someone else's definition of unusual. Raw data APIs return chains, quotes, trades and greeks. They are more flexible, but detecting anything interesting is your code's job. Many projects end up using one of each.

1. OptionsBell - unusual activity endpoints, bundled with alerts

OptionsBell's REST API serves the same dataset behind its email alerts, so you start from the unusual subset of the tape instead of the whole chain. The 17 endpoints cover market-wide unusual activity and top prints, per-symbol flow and flow history, multi-day streaks, expiry concentration, summary stats, flow sentiment, IV rank, open-interest changes, sector rollups and a market breadth view.

  • Price: $24.99/mo, one plan. The API, the MCP server and email alerts are all included.
  • Limits: 30 requests a minute and 2,000 a day, with bearer-token auth and a published OpenAPI spec.
  • Best for: dashboards, notebooks, bots and AI agents that need to know where unusual options money is going without building detection from raw trades.
  • Not included: full option chains, quote-level tick data or order routing. Pair it with a raw data API if you need those.

2. Unusual Whales API - the deepest flow signal dataset

Unusual Whales sells API access separately; its dashboard plans do not include it. What you get is the most complete flow-labeled dataset on this list: real-time options flow and flow alerts, the option trade tape over WebSocket, sweep flags, dark pool prints, greeks and open interest.

  • Price: API Basic $150/mo, or $1,500/yr. Advanced is $375/mo. A one-week trial is available.
  • Limits: Basic allows 80,000 requests a day; Advanced has no daily cap.
  • Licensing: retail and API plans are for individual use. Commercial use requires a separate business plan.
  • Best for: builders who want sweeps, flow alerts and dark pool data ready-made and have the budget.

3. Massive (formerly Polygon.io) - the cheapest self-serve trades and quotes

Polygon.io rebranded as Massive in late 2025. Its options plans scale by data depth: greeks and snapshots from the entry plan, trades from Developer, quotes and real-time data on Advanced. There are no flow labels, but paid plans come with unlimited API calls and there is an official MCP server.

  • Price: free end-of-day tier (5 calls/min); Starter $29/mo (15-minute delayed); Developer $79/mo (adds trades); Advanced $199/mo (real-time, quotes).
  • Licensing: options plans are personal licenses, business use is priced separately, and Advanced requires non-professional status.
  • Best for: developers who want to build their own flow detection from trades without an institutional contract.

4. ThetaData - tick-level options history at retail prices

ThetaData is real-time on every paid tier and prices by data depth rather than request volume: requests are unlimited, and tiers differ in history granularity and concurrency. It also ships a local MCP server inside its Theta Terminal.

  • Price: free end-of-day history from mid-2023; Value $40/mo (1-minute history, greeks, IV); Standard $80/mo (tick level, every NBBO quote); Pro $160/mo (full trade stream).
  • Licensing: individual personal use only, no redistribution or business use.
  • Best for: backtesting options strategies and unusual-activity rules on deep history.

5. MarketData.app - cheap chains for individuals

MarketData.app is a clean chains-and-quotes API: bid and ask, volume, open interest, IV and greeks, with history. It meters in credits, and each option symbol returned costs a credit, so chain-heavy workloads should do the math first.

  • Price: free tier with 100 credits a day and 24-hour delayed options; Starter $30/mo, or $12/mo billed annually, on a 15-minute delay; real-time from the $75/mo Trader plan, for non-professionals.
  • Licensing: internal use; redistribution needs a custom commercial plan and an OPRA license.
  • Best for: individual traders pulling chains into spreadsheets and scripts.

6. Alpaca - broker and data API in one

Alpaca's market data API covers options quotes, trades, bars and snapshots with greeks, next to its trading API, which makes it a natural base for options bots. The free plan's options quotes are indicative rather than actual OPRA quotes, and the docs list options history from February 2024.

  • Price: Basic is free (indicative quotes, trades 15 minutes delayed, 200 calls/min); Algo Trader Plus is $99/mo with the real-time OPRA feed and 10,000 calls/min.
  • Best for: bots that trade options and want data and execution from one provider.

7. Tradier - real-time chains for brokerage clients

Tradier's brokerage API gives account holders real-time quotes, option chains and streaming, with greeks supplied by ORATS and updated hourly. The sandbox is 15 minutes delayed.

  • Price: requires a Tradier Brokerage account; the Lite plan is $0/mo.
  • Limits: 120 market data requests a minute in production, 60 in the sandbox.
  • Best for: traders who already use, or are happy to open, a Tradier account.

8. ORATS - volatility analytics with history since 2007

ORATS is an analytics API rather than a raw feed: chains with greeks and IV, more than 500 indicators, and end-of-day history back to 2007. Trade prints with greeks are available as a Time and Sales add-on.

  • Price: Delayed Data API $199/mo (20,000 requests a month); Live $299, Live Intraday $599, All-In $899. Time and Sales adds $299. No free trials.
  • Best for: implied volatility research and systematic strategies that need clean historical greeks.

9. Intrinio - options data with a commercial licensing path

Intrinio's Individual plan includes OptionsEdge, a real-time synthetic midpoint price with IV and greeks, plus end-of-day and historical options. OptionsEdge is not OPRA data; real OPRA feeds, which also add unusual activity, are Enterprise products.

  • Price: Individual $150/mo (one seat, no redistribution or display); commercial Startup plans from $333/mo; Enterprise OPRA from $1,250/mo.
  • Best for: startups that need a licensed way to display options data in their own product.

10. Databento - raw OPRA tick data for quant teams

Databento sells normalized raw OPRA data: trades, top-of-book quotes, OHLCV bars and statistics, with history back to 2013. There are no flow labels; this is the full feed for teams that want to build everything themselves.

  • Price: Standard is $199/mo including live OPRA, and new accounts get $125 in historical data credits.
  • Best for: quant teams building their own detection on complete tick data.

11. Alpha Vantage - historical chains on an affordable key

Alpha Vantage offers options chains with greeks and IV plus more than 15 years of history, alongside stocks, fundamentals and indicators on the same key. Both options endpoints are Premium features, and real-time options need a separate sign-up for personal use.

  • Price: the free key allows 25 requests a day without options; Premium starts at $49.99/mo with 75 requests a minute.
  • Best for: research projects that need historical chains and fundamentals from one provider.

How to choose

  • You want to know where unusual money is going, fast: a signal API. OptionsBell at $24.99 with alerts included, or Unusual Whales if you need sweeps and dark pool data.
  • You want to build your own detection: Massive for trades on a budget, ThetaData for deep history, Databento for complete OPRA ticks.
  • You need chains and greeks for a tool or spreadsheet: MarketData.app, Tradier or Alpha Vantage.
  • You trade programmatically: Alpaca or Tradier, where data and execution share an account.
  • You plan to show the data to customers: read the license first. Most retail plans here are for individual use only; Intrinio and Unusual Whales sell separate commercial plans.
